Hope’s Braids is the second installment from ‘Daddy Do my Hair?’, the brand of daddy and daughter focused books bought to us by author Tola Okogwu and illustrator Rahima Begum. We loved the first Daddy Do My Hair book, Beth’s Twists, which was an introduction into the series and a look into how the books will highlight and promote the importance of father and daughter relationships. We featured Beth’s Twists on the blog, check it out here.
Where Beth’s Twists was an introduction to the series, Hope’s Braids continues the daddy daughter theme while addressing a serious issue in bullying. The storyline follows a young girl arriving home upset that other children at school have been mocking her ginger hair. Her dad proceeds to comfort her, explain she is beautiful and do her hair in the process. The end result is a happy child, reassured that her differences are what make her unique and special.

Bullying is an issue that all parents worry about at some stage. It’s so important to instill a sense of self-love and self-worth in our children and it’s difficult to do that when competing with all the other external influences that our children will come across. But still, we do have control over what happens at home and that’s where we can focus on making sure that our children feel love and know they are amazing. This is where Hope’s Braids really shines. The book serves as a reminder to have those conversations with our kids and it shows the positive impact they can have.
Beth’s Twists is an important and hard hitting book that tackles some really sensitive issues. For us, the series is perfect as it focuses on the important role that fathers play in making their children feel loved and secure, no matter what is going on in life.
As with the first edition, Hope’s Braids is expertly written, illustrated and produced. It’s a quality book that get’s the MFF seal of approval. You need this in your collection!
Daddy Do My Hair? Beth’s Twists is available to purchase from Amazon, Waterstones and other good book stores.
