On Wednesday 7th September we headed down to the Roundhouse in Camden for the Rated Awards. The event, curated by GRMDaily and KA Drinks, is the pinnacle in UK underground music celebration, rewarding artists for their work over the last 12 months in a variety of categories. For more on why the Rated Awards is so important, check out our previous article on who should win the Rated Awards here.
The Rated Awards were highly anticipated and they didn’t let us down! The sold out event (bigup the good people at That Grape Juice for the hookup) was attended by the whole UK rap and grime industry alongside some very excited and passionate fans. The event was a great celebration of not just the individuals who won but of how far the scene has come in general.
Here we’ve listed the top 5 moments from the 2016 Rated Awards!
Poet picking up his award for ‘Best Personality’ in a bathrobe!
We at MFFonline are big fans of Poet’s work. He co-hosts one of our favourite podcasts (Halfcast), features in one of our favourite football online shows (Filthy Fellas) and is an all round cool guy. So while everybody got suited and booted for the award show, Poet came in his bathrobe! Poet and Vuj won the award for Best Personality and in our opinion, it’s rightly deserved.

Ray Blk bringing real soul to the show with her performance of ‘My Hood’!
Ray Blk gave a touching performance of her biggest track, ‘My Hood’. This girl can really sing and her live performance had the whole audience transfixed as her soulful voice took us on a journey. We really believe she will do big things, so much so that we tipped Ray Blk to win best breakthrough here. The stripped down set gave the perfect balance to an event filed with deep bass and heavy bars.

Kano winning the award for ‘Best Album’
In our preview article we hoped Kano would win this category as he has delivered a masterpiece of an album. Perhaps not as hyped as Skepta’s ‘Konnichiwa’ or Giggs’ ‘Landlord’, ‘Made In The Manor’ is a more understated album but overall the best musical body of work! Kano winning this award proved that good music is rewarded and it’s good to see that the general public recognise and support great albums.

Abracadabra’s acceptance speech after ‘Robbery’ won Best Track. “I Love Everybody” lol
Abracadabra has most definitely announced himself on the scene this year. The 17 year old from Tottenham delivered an energetic performance at the awards and this was followed by him winning the award for Best Track for his song ‘Robbery’. Abracadabra had clearly been enjoying himself and this showed as during his acceptance speech he proclaimed that he ‘loves everybody’ and asked if the Rated Award gong was gold lol. The whole place was cracking up, it was definitely a moment.
Giggs shutting down the show with half the audience on stage for ‘Whippin Excursion’!!
After winning the Best Artist award, it was only right that Giggs closed the show. Giggs performed a few of his tracks, including ‘3 Wheel Ups’ with Kano and ‘Lock Doh’ with Donaeo, but finished with one of the biggest songs out at the moment, ‘Whippin Excursion’! Giggs was joined by what seemed like half the audience on stage as the hype of the night came to a climax. This was the perfect ending to a wicked night. As a side note, check out Skepta’s dancing, surely he’ll be nominated for Best Skank next year lol
